I initially jailbroke the phone just as you instructed. After some time I was downloading a lot of apps, and while downloading xGPS from ICY the download froze up (continuous spinning icon in center of screen).
I pressed the pwr button for 3 seconds and got the dreaded frozen Apple logo - so I did a full restore, sad to have to re-install cydia, icy and all my jailbreak apps.
Now, when I run Redsn0w it times out on “Restoring Jailbreak Data” and dumps me to slider screen.

I figured it out, I just restored my iphone and then jailbroke it again, how do download themes onto your computer and then get them onto your iphone?
waltpsu | November 20th, 2009 at 2:25 pm #

Alright, I have come to a solution. I read on the Apple support page and finally got it to work! You just have to delete the Restore file, and restore the iPhone. [Windows Vista]
iPhone: C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPhone Software Updates
Thanks!

well if that doesn’t work, i’d try apple’s support page and google for an answer

‘iTunes has detected an iPhone in recovery mode. You must restore this iPhone before it can be used with iTunes’ I also tried restoring, but the same thing happens

I tried unplugging and pluging them in, but it still shows it
waltpsu | November 20th, 2009 at 2:25 pm #
sounds like you need to plug it into itunes and finish the update

I tried updating to 3.0.1 but while loading the iPhone, iTunes closed by itself, and when the phone was done loading, it showed a picture of the USB end pointing up to an iTunes icon? Can you please help? D:

how the heck did you do that? the only way i can think that you would have deleted the cydia icon is by SSH, and i’ve never used SSH on the iphone. sorry, i won’t be much help here!

waltpsu! thanks for the vid. I am using an iPhone 3G jailbronken with quickpawn running on 2.2.1 firmaware. I have a ton of stuff in it. I see everyone doing restore, that is going to erase evrything, but I hear it is not safe to update a jailbroken device without doing restore first. I just want to update to 3.0 or 3.0.1 without losing my songs, pics, and vids…I dont mind jailbreaking again, it is jusr that I dont wanna loose everything in the phone! please help on this thankyou!
