How to Make a Foxhole Radio
1 Dec, 2009 | Posted by nancyperez | under Podcasting (Audio)
During World War II, GIs in the field built really amazing simple radios to listen too. These were made with materials that they could get their hands on and were small enough to carry around in a big pocket. You can modify this design if you want to set it up so that it’s tuneable too! How long would that 120 times around the coil translate to?

@anorwood84 tyvm! very well explained!

Like AC voltage, Radio waves are alternating as well… As with any alternating current, they travel to areas of smaller potential. So for example, Radio Waves being picked up by the antenna have a higher potential than ground. So the current travels from the antenna through the coil, catwhisker, through the earpiece, then to the ground.

i got so lucky i listned to 103.5 and in a walk in a park i listened to 101.1 they have realy good songs

Yes the number of coils will affect the tuning frequency.
Using a ground maximizes the potential difference between the radio wave and ground. In other words it makes the signal bigger.

Does anyone know if the amount of coils change the radio station you pick up or the quality or anything at all?
yourpersonalspammer | December 1st, 2009 at 11:10 am #
why do I need a ground?

The pencil lead / razor blade combo is a basic diode, allowing the current to flow in only one direction.
