Soap? Ehm…. how about the cheapest one? Or atleast a brand with a good enough price vs quality ratio.
You can sit here all day and blame the poor choices people make on outside factors.
Still don’t like the “mind control” being used on the poor “sheep”? Well fucking tough!!! Advertising has been around since the first proto-human figured out how to trade a nice stick for a bit of food or something else that was in low supply. And it’s gonna remain as long as we still trade between each other.

they DO affect you subconsciously, even if you’re not aware of it. simply seeing logos etc will affect your judgement later on when you are in the store and whatever.
think about it, if you’re about to buy soap for example, will you more likely buy a brand of soap you are familiar with (from ads), or something that you havent heard of?

I see what you mean, I think. If “normal” is understood to mean “most often encountered variant” then you were wishing for a world where the most often encountered kind of person was one who is peaceful and reflective. Perhaps I should have said “aberrant” but I think the word “normal” served adequately.

Marketers hate conscious consumers. Be aware! Buy only what you really want and need. Don’t be swayed by clever campaigns and pretty colors.
givebirthathome | August 29th, 2009 at 4:14 pm #
I have no trouble saying marketing people are not normal either!
What I *am* saying is that unfortunately, people who are aware of the negative effects of advertising and choose to avoid it, are relatively elite in terms of awareness…the avoiders are unfortunately not normal, but rather supernormal, otherwise advertising would be more legally restricted. Normal people are somewhat disgusted by dog poo for example–many places have laws requiring owners to pick up the poo.

I beg to differ. I have no trouble in saying that marketing people are not normal. I agree with Bill Hicks - try this you tube vid: /watch?v=gDW_Hj2K0wo

Right…. they affect me subconsciously…
Maybe for you, certainly not for me.
It’s very simple: Whenever you buy something, just ask yourself if you really need/want it. Easy enough.

“Normal” is a tricky word ; )
Ah, for the world in which intelligent people who desire quiet minds so that they can listen that inner voice…are normal.

YEAH I APPRECIATE ADS TARGETED AT ME! gee thanks… lol

The marketing people will start a campaign calling all owners and users of tv-b-gone devices “censorship fascists”, and the sheeple will suck it up. And buy another TV to put in the toilet so they don’t miss anything important like being told that to share something is “piracy”, and that there are countless items they can buy to replace the other needless shite that they thought was fashionable but no longer is. Oh, but all this waste does keep the economy going! *rolls eyes*

“the internet itself wouldn’t exist without ads.. ”
The Internet existed well before ads. It was invented at universities like MIT under public finance. Business had nothing to do with its existence. They merely came along after the fact and tried to finance their content with advertising. There was and still is plenty of good content on the Web that has no advertising.

You know that scene in Minority Report where Tom Cruise goes past a screen and does a personalised advert at him, due to the eyeball recognition? Marketing people watch that scene and have an orgasm. Normal people watch with disgust.

State the fucking obvious in five minutes when you could have said it in fifteen seconds.

Direct marketing has already existed for decades, despite the speaker’s assertion.
Facebook abuses its position.

You can’t ignore rape… My point was that it has become impossible to ignore this publicity machine! Every single aspect of our daily lives has been invaded by spam… every newspaper I read, every place I look, even the floors on which I walk are billboards now… fuck that!
